Wood Destroying Pests
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are large, 1/4 to 1/2 inch, black or red-black, with smooth, rounded thoraxes. They excavate wood for nests, causing structural damage. Look for sawdust piles; professional baiting helps.

Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bees are robust, 1/2 to 1 inch, black with shiny abdomens (females) or yellow faces (males). They bore into wood for nests. They pollinate but damage structures; they seal holes.

Powderpost Beetles
Powderpost beetles are small (about 1/8 inch), reddish-brown to black, with elongated bodies. Larvae reduce wood to powder. They infest hardwoods; heat treatment or insecticides are needed.

Termites
Termites are soft-bodied, 1/4 inch, pale or white, with straight antennae. Workers damage wood silently. Look for mud tubes; annual inspections are crucial.
